Balaton Uplands
The Balaton Uplands are an excellent destination for outings that will add spice to any Lake Balaton vacation. Next to plentiful natural assets this landscape is rich in heritage attractions and cultural activities.
One of the most spectacular natural features of the Balaton Uplands is the basalt cone known as the Sharp Needle (Hegyestű) near Monoszló. Next to the rolling countryside of the Pécsely Basin, the Kál Basin is known afar for the 'stone seas' - unique rock areas with huge, bizarre stone fields, boulders and ridges - on the outskirts of Kővágóörs, Salföld and Szentbékkálla. The ruins of Zádor Castle at Pécsely, the remains of former churches and monasteries, as well as the museum houses and local history collections of the villages all preserve the past of this landscape.
