André Kertész (1894-1985), the Hungarian-born photographer, donated some 120 signed photographs to the museum's collection. After his death, some of his furniture and personal objects from his flat in New York were also sent to the museum.
André Kertész spent his childhood summer holidays with his uncle in Szigetbecse. He visited the fondly remembered town in 1984, and endowed the community with a collection of valuable photographs that are now exhibited here. This memorial house was opened in 1985.
When asked about the town and its people in an interview late in his life, he said, "Becse (refers to Szigetbecse) was not a determining experience because my relatives were there, but because I gained real proximity with nature and the people I was with... Later on, when I was taking landscape or portrait photos either in France or in New York, landscape and people of Becse were reborn on each of my photos who emerged in every picture".The museum has wheelchair access.
