Babolna
Bábolna is one of the most important centres of horse breeding and equestrian traditions in Hungary. A natural asset, the Bábolna National Stud Estate breeds English and Arabian thoroughbreds of excellent quality. Most of the museums in the settlement are connected to its equestrian past.
First mentioned in documents in 1268, the village was named after its former landlords, the Babunai family.
The area became deserted during the Turkish occupation. In 1789 an army stud was founded in Bábolna on the orders of King Joseph II to supply the army horse reserves. In 1868 the institution was taken over by the Hungarian state and became a renowned centre of horse breeding.
In 1948 the Bábolna State Farm National Corporation was formed from the former State Stud Estate. From then on the settlement began to earn an excellent international reputation for breeding poultry hybrids, pigs and sheep as well as for horses. Alongside animal husbandry large scale sweetcorn and fodder production have also gained in importance.
In 2003 Bábolna was granted city status.
How to get there:
By public transport, Volán buses run to Bábolna from either Győr or Komárom. By car, take the M1 motorway.
