Barcs
The settlement is rich in built heritage. Among its natural assets is the ancient juniper grove, part of Danube-Dráva National Park, and the swamp lakes in the former Dráva riverbed. There is a border crossing into Croatia near Barcs.
Traces of human habitation around here date back to 5,000 BC. Huns, Slavs and Avars have all lived in these parts.
The town was first mentioned in a charter of 1389 as belonging to the Segesd estates of the queen.
The castle of Barcs came under Turkish rule for 120 years starting in 1555. During these years the area became virtually deserted and it was not until 1677 that it was resettled by Croatians and Germans.
During the 1848-49 Freedom Fight, Barcs and its surrounding area became a battle scene on several occasions. After some setbacks the economy picked up pace once again around 1868 when commerce became noticably stronger with the completion of the railway line between Pécs and Murakeresztúr.
The settlement was granted city status in 1979.
