Held annually, the Baroque Wedding Historical Festival is a spectacular programme of unique events in which the main attraction is the traditional Baroque wedding ceremony orchestrated by a master of ceremonies.

The three-day weekend series of events begins on Friday with a Baroque serenade. Drummers, dancers and announcers roam the city inviting everyone to the torchlight concert in the courtyard of the Zichy Palace. The concert transports guests into the past, into the life of Győr in days gone by.

On Saturday, the second day of the festivities, a medieval market comes alive in the city centre on Széchenyi Square where vendors sell their wares. That same afternoon a regular event is held: the test of skills. Participants symbolically take back the castle of Győr from the Turkish, rebuild the destroyed walls, harness the oxen, become horses and riders and finally compete for the golden ring offered by the bride.

On Sunday, the last and most important day of the celebration, things continue to sizzle on the main square: the visual feast of comedians, jugglers, catchpoles, and witches satisfies those who seek the unusual. The most spectacular part of the evening events is undoubtedly the real Baroque wedding ceremony in which an engaged couple promises to be eternally faithful to one another. Under a decorated tent, kneeling the young couple bids farewell to the parental home and the new bride is reminded of good virtue with a sharp sword. After the ceremony the newlyweds release doves, the symbols of happiness. Guests and visitors may taste the special wedding loaf that contains a lucky message, or the meats, washing down the day's excitement with good wine. Culminating the excitement and the celebration - people are invited to dance with the newlyweds.

The festival is complemented by gastronomic events, among them the traditionally held preparation of rétes, the Hungarian strudel pastry. The tasty and unique strudels are generally served on the morning of the second day of the festival - Saturday - in the city centre.
