Between the Danube and Lake Velence
This small region is bordered by the River Danube to the north and the land north of the Velence Hills towards the south.
It boasts a truly varied countryside given that its western part is defined by the Little Plain (Kisalföld) but it also features the Vértes and Gerecse hill ranges. Brown coal and bauxite were once mined on Mount Vértes (487 metres). Grapes are cultivated on the western hillsides along the Mór Rift; these vineyards belong to the Mór wine region. At Csákvár, visit the Gessner House where you can marvel at photographs and dioramas depicting the natural assets of the Vértes Hills and the Zámoly Basin. Don't miss, however, the opportunity to personally visit the natural heritage of the Vértes Landscape Protection Area.
Mount Gerecse rises 633 metres and is noted, amongst others, for its reddish limestone known as Süttő or Piszke Limestone.
