Central Roman Catholic parish church of the Holy Trinity and monastery, Szolnok

This Baroque-style church and the monastery were built for the Franciscan order between 1724 and 1757 according to the designs of Eger-based architect Giovanni Battista Carlone. The church gained its current form in the 19th century.

The group of statues depicting the Holy Trinity (Szentháromság) was placed above the main entrance in 1757. Despite the extended period it had taken to build the church, repairs were needed before long; in 1770 the roof was reconstructed and the wooden ceiling unusual of Baroque was also reconstructed. The tower lookout was finished in 1835 and the tower roof was gilded at the same time. During an earthquake the tower tilted and the sanctuary was damaged, requiring yet another large-scale renovation in 1867.

The archivolt organ window was placed on the west facade and can be seen above the entrance. Statue niches with coping stones and above them glass widows with strongly protruding lintels can be seen in the two outermost sections of the main facade. The facade is completed with a tympanum under which is another statue niche. Pilasters with a double cornice crown extend from the foundations through the projecting main crown moulding right up to the gable.

The particularly high main nave with four vault sections was created with a false rib vaulting. Three side altars on either side are separated from one another by Doric engaged bundle columns. The richly decorated soundboard of the Baroque pulpit is held by two angels with a figure of the Good Shepherd on the top and the four Evangelists underneath. One of the 14 side altars in the church is the first known work of Szolnok painter Matthew Stefanovits and dates from 1737. The frescos were prepared in 1819, the paintings of the Stations of the Cross in the 19th century, and the tabernacle in 1745.
