Csopak
Famous for its wine, the village of Csopak lies on the shore of Lake Balaton. Its wine houses, cellars and vernacular houses all stand witness to the centuries-long tradition of wine growing. Its holiday resort area is connected to the bathing stretch at the lake and attracts hundreds of guests.
The name of the village has Bulgarian-Turkish origins and signifies a kind of fish. The little hill of the former fishing village, Stone Coffin Hill (Kőkoporsó-domb), was once covered with Roman villas, today by holiday homes and resort buildings, and of course, extensive vineyards.
After the period of the Hungarian Settlement, three communities developed in the territory of Csopak and there were several water mills. This heritage is displayed in an exhibition on the history of mills.
Csopak was already famous for its wine a century and a half ago. The main grape of the wine is the Italian Riesling (olaszrizling).
Besides the wine, the village has another treasure, its mineral waters. At the lakeside, at the entrance to the beautifully developed bathing area, there is a carbonated water spring that is particularly effective for gastric and biliary complaints. It is however also excellent with the Csopak wine.
How to get there:
By railway, Csopak is served from Székesfehérvár and Tapolca. From Veszprém and Balatonfüred, local Volán buses run to Csopak several times. By car take Route 71 which runs along the northern shores of the Balaton, or Route 73 from Veszprém.
