The natural values of the ribbon-like Duna-Dráva National Park are defined by the flowing and standing waters: floodplain areas are characterised by rich flora and fauna particularly diverse in bird species.

The process of designating particularly important areas linked to the rivers set out in 1962. Its prime aim was to protect the natural assets, the water reserves above and below ground, the forests, agricultural land and other renewable natural sources of energy of the rivers, their side branch systems and associated areas.

Total area: 49,478.8 hectares
Ramsar areas: Szaporcai Ó-Dráva riverbed; Gemenc; Béda-Karapancsa,  Pacsmagi fishing lakes

Bird watching hides: Béda-Karapancsa, Drávaszentes damp meadows, and Nyéki Danube Oxbow Lake (Nyéki-Holt-Duna) by the Gemenc Forest
Planned bird watching hides: Heresznyei Dráva High Embankment (expert guides available)

Water tourism
Over recent years areas around the Danube and Dráva water tours have become increasingly popular since they provide the perfect opportunity to become more familiar with the natural assets. Permission for tours on the River Dráva must be obtained from the park management.

Juniper Woods at Barcs (off route 6 towards the car rest area)
Lake Malomtelelő in the Gemenc (access from the narrow gauge railway)
Leisure Centre at Cap Bárány (by Szekszárd)
East Mecsek (on the road from Magyaregregy to Máré Castle)
Pécs (Jakab Hill)
Abaliget (above the cave)
Paks (on the 'ürgemező' meadow on the outskirts of town)
