Esterhazy Palace Gardens, Fertod
The park was designed as a Baroque French Garden modelled on Versailles. The surviving area is today a nature reserve.
In line with the fashion of the Baroque era, a French Garden was established around the Esterházy Palace at Fertőd. As in other gardens landscaped in the French style, green plants (that is the emphasis is on the colour, not flowers) adorn paths that radiate out from a central point to a chapel or a religious statue.
In the 19th century, the gardens structured on geometric forms were transformed into an English-style landscaped park offering a more natural scene. This parkland had run wild by the turn of the century when Count Margit Cziráky, Mrs Miklós Esterházy, started to restore them. A small park with pines and deciduous trees can be found around the grave where she and her husband were laid to rest.
The gardens can be visited free of charge.
