Northern Great Plain

The Great Northern Plain boasts cultural values, curative waters, varied landscapes, and natural assets worthy of inclusion as World Heritage Sites. The region encompasses the counties of Hajdú-Bihar, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok.

The region has something to offer everyone: those planning a family holiday, those interested in architectural heritage, local traditions and gastronomy, even those looking for contemporary music, theatre or fine arts.

Travelling from west to east we find a series of smaller regions within the region that have managed to preserve the characteristic appearance of the Northern Great Plain even today. Such places are the Jászság, Tiszazug, Nagykunság, Hortobágy, Hajdúság and the areas of Berettyó and Nyírség, the plains of Szatmár and Bereg, along with Rétköz and the Nyír-Mezőség. These areas provide visitors with a wide range of both natural beauty and folk traditions characteristic of the individual landscapes here.

The unique values of the Northern Plain are riches not seen elsewhere in Hungary: wooden belfries in the Szatmár region, bird sanctuaries along the River Tisza, churches, places of pilgrimage, castles and palaces, historic mementoes.

Szigligeti Theatre in Szolnok

Known as the 'Calvinist Rome', Debrecen is perhaps the most frequently visited of the three county seats. However,  Szolnok and Nyíregyháza have their own share of sites and attractions.

The spa centres offer fun and relaxation, as well as natural approaches to healing: Hajdúszoboszló, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, as well as the numerous smaller settlements with an active resort life in and around the natural mineral springs. Areas by rivers and lakes are excellent destinations for nature lovers and for those who can't get enough of water and water sports.

The Hortobágy offers unique sights both as a national park and as part of the World Heritage. Additionally, several nature reserves protect the area's natural assets where traditionally built homes provide an opportunity for rural and eco-tourism.

There are a variety of cultural events scheduled throughout the year in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary. To mention only a few, let us start in spring: a cultural festival in Debrecen and a music festival in Szolnok. As time moves to summer choose from a traditional preserving fest in Túrkeve, equestrian days and the bridge fair at Hortobágy, street theatre festival at Nyírbátor, festival of Hungarian theatres abroad at Kisvárda, entertaining programmes on the banks of the Tisza, and the Csángó festival in Jászberény. Autumn brings the fruit festival in Nyíregyháza, Jazz days in Debrecen, and another cultural festival in Szolnok, among many others. Enjoy!
