Fegyvernek

The River and Lake Tisza are within easy reach of this calm settlement situated next to the Alsórét Tisza Backwaters (Alsóréti Holt-Tisza), a unique ecological asset. On the outskirts a ferry sets across the river to Nagykörű.

The village's name originates from the armour-bearers (fegyver meaning arm, weapon), servants of the king in the Árpád Age, who once lived there. The first written record dates from 1212.

During Turkish rule the village became depopulated. At the end of the 17th century German settlers were brought there and in consequence German-sounding names are widespread in the settlement.

The proximity of the River Tisza has always exerted an influence on village life and nowadays this is primarily linked to tourism. Not only are the backwaters an excellent resort and angling site, they also serve as a significant protected resting area for migrating birds.

The emblem of Fegyvernek, Puszta Tower is the remaining steeple of a 1480 Gothic church and is among the oldest built heritage of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County.

An interesting sight is the pantheon of famous personalities associated with the town. Here are a few of their names representative for all scions of Fegyvernek who earned fame in other parts of the world: brain researcher Dr. József Hámori, the Kossuth laureate composer Zoltán Jeney, György Tóth the lion tamer of Hollywood fame, and the chief falconer of the queen of the Netherlands György Lelovich.

How to get there:
The village is on the Budapest-Debrecen. Local Volán buses run to Fegyvernek from Tiszafüred, the largest town of the Lake Tisza area. By car, take Route 4 connecting Budapest and Debrecen, or Route 34 from the direction of Tiszafüred.
