The new Fishermen's Bastion was erected between 1895 and 1902 on the foundations of 18th century castle-walls to replace an old stronghold. The neo-Gothic construction dominates the Budapest skyline.

The new Fishermen's Bastion, designed by Frigyes Schulek, never served any
defensive purposes.
In the middle of the Bastion's courtyard stands a statue of King St Stephen (Szent István király), and, at the foot of the Bastion, a statue of János Hunyadi was a gift from Franz Joseph. Hunyadi was the general who defeated the Turkish troops at Nándorfehérvár (Belgrade), and the father of the renaissance King Matthias (Mátyás király). A copy of the statue of St George in Cluj Napoca/Kolozsvár can also be seen at the foot of the bastion.
The original Fishermen's Bastion was named after the fishermen's guild that in medieval times was ordered to protect the stronghold.
The modern Bastion can be visited for an entrance fee from 9 am-11 pm between 15th March and 15th October. It is free of charge at other times.
