Fort Igmand (Igmandi erod), Komarom
The predecessor of the youngest structure of the system of forts at Komárom, an earthen fort with a stockade was built on the site of a medieval earthen redoubt during the 1848-49 War of Independence.
An integral part of the new system of fortifications, the present fort was built between 1871 and 1878 on the site of the earthen fort achieved during the War of Independence, in order to protect the southern entrance of the town.
It is an interesting feature that the so-called transversal redoubts
built as protection against enemy fragmentation charges have survived in their
original state.
The fort blocked the road leading into the city from the
south and ensured that the individual forts within the system had continuous,
interlocking fields of fire. Its completion marked the achievement of the
gigantic Komárom system of fortifications. It was named after the nearby village
of Igmánd.
It is much more modest in terms of size than Fort Monostor. Consisting of 106 rooms, it has useful floorspace totalling 4,600 square metres and a gross footprint of 6,200 square metres.
