Fuzer
The village is best known for its castle towering on a rock above the settlement, one of Hungary's earliest and most romantic fortresses. However, Füzér is also of interest for its numerous vernacular heritage houses and the surrounding area is excellent for walking.
At one time the village was the seat of Abaúj County. Its fortune is closely linked to the history of the castle, now a popular destination for outings for its beauty. Erected in the years before 1235 it was one of the earliest castles built in the Árpád Age. The Holy Crown of Hungary was kept here for a year.
Made up of andesite pillars the volcanic cone on which the castle sits is in itself an outstanding natural asset.
How to get there:
By public transport, take a train to Sátoraljaújhely, then a a bus to Hollóháza that
serves Füzér. By car pass through Sátoraljaújhely on Route 37
then continue northwest towards Hollóháza at the big Y-junction before
the border crossing, continue straight through Pálháza then follow the
signposts to Füzér, a dead-end village.
