Godollo
The largest Baroque castle in Hungary stands in this historic town which dates back to the 14th century. Gödöllő, including the settlement of Máriabesnyő, the famous place of pilgrimage, was granted city rights in 1966.
The Royal Palace
The development of the region was fostered by one of the most influential lords in Hungary, Antal Grassalkovich I, who became the owner of the town in the 18th century.
Construction of his palace, the Royal Palace, began in 1741; it remains the most famous building in Gödöllő to this day.
The construction of the famous pilgrimage curch in Máriabesnyő, is also connected to the name of Antal Grassalkovich I, as are the numerous Baroque works of art he commissioned for public squares.
Gödöllő also played a significant part in Hungarian art history. Between 1901 and 1920 the only organised artists' colony of Hungarian Secession was based here.
How to get there:
Gödöllő is located off the M3 motorway and Route 3. By train taken the Budapest-Hatvan line. Alternatively, take the Budapest-Gödöllő suburban railway line (HÉV) built in 1911.
