Grassalkovich Royal Palace (kiralyi kastely), Godollo
One of the largest Baroque palaces in Hungary, the Grassalkovich Palace was built at the beginning of the 1700's. In 1867 it was redesigned as a royal summer residence and it is this period which is shown by the interior.
The Grassalkovich Palace and its annexes were designed by Andreas Mayerhoffer. The seven wings of the double U-shaped building were built in several stages.
The ceremonial hall is located in the central section of the building and faces the street. It has an area of 170 square metres and its walls are covered with artificial marble and golden stucco. North of the hall were the rooms of the women of the Grassalkovich family and to the south, the rooms of the men. Antal Grassalkovich I turned his room over to the visiting Maria Theresa upon her visit to Gödöllő in 1751. The room fitted out for the queen is the most beautifully decorated room of the palace. The Royal Hill Pavilion (Királydombi Pavilon) was also built at this time.
The Palace was partially remodelled between 1782 and 1785. A Theatre with two rows of boxes and excellent stage equipment was created at that time. This is the only reconstructed Baroque Theatre in Hungary today.
The next significant remodelling took place in 1867 when the palace was turned into a royal summer residence.
Today the building is a museum exhibiting the reconstructed private royal suites. The Palace also serves as a significant venue for cultural and private functions. There is wheelchair access to the park.
