Gyula Krudy
(21st October 1878, Nyíregyháza - 12th May 1933, Budapest)
novelist, journalist
He studied in Nyíregyháza, Satu Mare/Szatmárnémeti and Podolínec/Podolin. His writings were already published in local perdiodicals while he was still in school. In 1896 he moved to Budapest where he wrote for several newspapers and periodicals. He was not yet 20 years old when his first novel was published. His first big literary successes were the Sinbad series and the Red Stage Coach (Vörös postakocsi).
He quickly found his own style and his works are equally characterised by impressionism, symbolism, naturalism and even secession. A significant number of his stories are set in the recent or distant past. Krúdy was the master of recollection. He was compared to the modern writers of his time like Proust or Joyce, due to a style full of associations and digression. He is the author of more than 50 novels and some 3,000 short stories, next to several thousand articles and essays.
