Hegyeshalom
First and foremost this village is known as Hungary's gate to the west; it is a border crossing on the transport links to Vienna, Austria.
The first written mention of the name Hegyeshalom (Pointed Mound) dates from 1217 and refers to a hillside standing out from its environs. On that mound stood the old village church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Sancta Maria became the German name of the settlement which mutated to Sanmaria, Samaraia, then Sommerein, and finally to Sommerein an der Strass.
In the 16th century the original population died out as a result of Turkish assaults and within roughly a century it was replaced by German settlers. Many architectural details, as well as the general layout and look of the village, bear witness to its German past.
How to get there:
By railway, the village is served from Győr, Mosonmagyaróvár, and Budapest. Volán buses serve Hegyeshalom from Mosonmagyaróvár. By car, take the M1 motorway or Route 1, leaving after Mosonmagyaróvár.
