The Hortobagy, the Hajdusag and Bihar
The local spas and the Hortobágy National Park (also listed as World Cultural Heritage) are the most valuable assets of this small region.
Part of the Great Plain, this landscape is mostly flat; the lowest point lies south of Püspökladány and is just under 85 metres above sea level. Although there are very few streams apart from the River Berettyó which is linked to the Tisza by the Eastern Main Channel, the area boasts a number of artificial lakes and an abundance of thermal waters. Along with the marshes, bogs and swamps, the puszta grasslands form the natural assets of the Hortobágy and the Tiszahát lands. The Sárrét ('muddy meadow') is best known for its ethnographic heritage. The peaceful surroundings of Rivers Berettyó and Körös hold a number of smaller villages and hamlets. By contrast, the city of Debrecen and its surroundings form the cultural, economic and transportation centre of the entire Northern Great Plain region.
