Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Muzeum), Budapest
The oldest and largest public collection in Hungary presents the history of the country in a permanent exhibition that stretches from the time of state establishmen (1000 AD) up to the democratic change of systems (1990 AD). It safeguards numerous priceless treasures.
The Museum,
founded by Count Ferenc Széchényi in 1802, contains over a million
archaeological, numismatic, historical and fine art objects, from which rich
display material has been selected for the permanent exhibitions. Through them
the Museum shows 'The history of Hungary from the time of the state
establishment up to 1990', and 'The history of the ethnic groups in the
Hungarian land between 400 000 BC and 804 AD'. There is also a wealth of stone
work finds. The Hungarian Coronation Mantle is kept here, too.
The
building, which hosted its first collection in 1846, is well worth a second
look. Perhaps the country's most beautiful classicist building, it was designed
by Mihály Pollack, an outstanding
architect of the era. The Museum Gardens offer an excellent opportunity for a
stroll and a rest.
The Museum has an unusual lapidary café set among masonry finds. Historical play-houses are organised for children at weekends. The Museum is accessible to disabled visitors via a side entrance; however, where required, it is advisable to call prior to a visit. Advance telephone booking is necessary for a guided tour.
