Janos Arany statue (szobor), Budapest
The statue of János Arany, a work of Alajos Stróbl and renown architect Albert Schikedanz, stands in front of the main facade of the Hungarian National Museum. The statue was unveiled in 1893.
The 4 metre-high pedestal of the monumental statue is of limestone from Haraszt. The sitting figure of János Arany is 3.5 metres tall. The 2.5 metre subsidiary figures evoke his writings: Miklós Toldi (modelled on fencing champion László Porteleky) and Piroska (modelled on Countess Alíz Széchenyi, granddaughter of Count István Széchenyi).
The date of the statue's erection was originally set for October 1887. Ten participants sent plans for the tender, and then a new tender was announced between György Zala and Alajos Stróbl, won by Alajos Stróbl in 1888.
