János Damjanich Museum, Szolnok
The permanent exhibition of the museum presents the history and the art scene of Szolnok and the Central Tisza region. The museum has a unique collection containing works of members of the Szolnok Artist Colony.
The artists of the Szolnok Art Colony (Művésztelep) immortalise the beauty of the Great Plain. Their artworks can be enjoyed in the collection of the museum.
The archaeological collection consists of over 120,000 pieces discovered in the excavations in the Jazygian (jász) and Cumanian (kun) areas. The nearly 15,000 pieces of the ethnographic collection includes wooden Christ and Mary statues from the second half of the 19th century, as well as clothing decorations and accessories.
The museum was named after János Damjanich, the general who led the triumphant battle of Szolnok during the 1848-49 Freedom Fights. In 1996 the museum won the 'Museum of the Year' award.
