Kalocsa embroidery
The designs of Kalocsa embroidery are freely arranged, and are created using mixed stitching methods. The most commonly depicted motifs are flowers: lily-of-the-valley, tulip, rose, lily, carnation, forget-me-not, pansy, rosemary, and various leaf shapes. These elements are stitched quite naturalistically in a way that the smaller and larger flowers form one composition.
The flowers themselves are sewn by hand using coloured threads, while the edges of spaces between (where there are intentional gaps in the material) are stitched by machine.
The embroidery appeared in a wide variety of local clothes, especially on women's wear. The folk art use of colourful and natural symbols does not appear exclusively in embroidery; some of its elements first appeared on the paintings of hand carved furniture, decorated ceramics, and wall paintings. The motifs of wall paintings were also used on 20th century dishes and porcelain pieces.
