Kekkut
With around 70 inhabitants, Kékkút is among the smallest settlements in Veszprém County. Its international fame is due to the mineral water that comes forth from the local springs.
The settlement's name originally meant stone well (kőkút); a charter dating from 1338 refers to it in that way.
The spring of Kékkút was already known to the Romans. They named it Theodora, as according to tradition it was the Byzantine empress' favourite drink. Built around this source of water, the Kékkút Mineral Water Ltd. (Kékkút Ásványvíz Rt.) trades over 30 million bottles of mineral water each year in Hungary and abroad. At the bottling plant's boundary fence there is a tap set in stone from which anyone is free to quench their thirst with Kékkút mineral water.
The oldest thatched peasant house in Kékkút and the surrounding region demonstrates the forms of historic vernacular architecture. Together with the stables it is now a Regional Museum (tájház). Although the building itself dates from the 18th century, the exhibition with period furnishings and everyday objects centres on the peasant household and farming of the early 20th century.
How to get there:
By public transport local Volán buses serve the village from Tapolca. By car, leave Route 71 which runs along the northern banks of Lake Balaton at Révfülöp or Ábrahámhegy taking the road through the village toward Tapolca.
