Museums
The museum was established by renowned Africa hunter Dr Endre Nagy. His unusual and valuable trophies are displayed alongside his Tanzanian ethnographic collection.

Founded in 1898 this is the oldest museum in the county. It presents the most complete picture of the history of the Balaton region, the lives of the people living around the lake and the fishing, boating and bathing heritage.

The house of the great painter József Egry who immortalised Lake Balaton and Badacsony so often is today a memorial museum. The development in Egry's style of landscape painting can be traced from the first painting of the Lake Balaton of 1916.

Monuments
The now ruined Romanesque-style basilica and abbey was erected in the 11th century and later rebuilt in Gothic style. A cemetery chapel and a cemetery have been excavated, as well as a medieval stonewall embracing the whole building complex.

The Classicist palace was built in the early 19th century. In 1953 it became home to the Writers' Studio (Irók Alkotóháza). Many of the nearby manorial buildings are listed heritage. After Count Pál Esterházy bought the palace and its estates in 1912 it was given its final form.

This castle originating from the 14th century was extended in the 15th century in a Gothic style and refurbished in the 16th-17th century. Today the castle is a stage for Renaissance games and festivals.Click to the picture - panoramaphoto by Boros Sándor!

This is the most lovely Romanesque village church in the Balaton Uplands (Balaton-felvidék). Built in the early 13th century from magenta bricks, its facade still bears witness to the distinct Romanesque style of the Árpád Age.

The castle was built on order of the Abbey of Pannonhalma between 1260 and 1262. Situated on top of the 239-metre high Castle Hill (Várhegy) the renovation of this ruined, elongated building is in progress.

In the nature
Hévíz, meaning thermal water in Hungarian, is the world's largest thermal lake with a surface area of 4.4 hectares. The water temperature in the cave from which it springs is 39.8 degrees Centigrade.

Intense basalt mining activities from the early 20th century scarred this magnificent landscape which was designated a protected area only from 1965. It is now part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. The landscape protection area is famous for its volcanic remnant hills.

The Balaton Uplands National Park encompasses Lake Balaton and a large portion of the Balaton Uplands. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1979, becoming the 8th national park in Hungary. The Balaton Uplands National Park lies to the north of the Lake Balaton shores. From Alsóörs it stretches westwards to Vindornya-szőlős in Zala County, becoming increasingly wide, also including the area of Little Balaton (Kis-Balaton). Its total area is 56,997 hectares of which 10,471 hectares are strictly protected. The park's nature conservation authorit

An area rich in beauty and natural assets, the Tihany Peninsula was declared protected in 1952, thus becoming the first landscape protection area in Hungary. The peninsula's surface is both unique and fascinating, showing the remnants of volcanic activities in ancient times.

Volcanic activities during the Quaternary geological period resulted in the deposition of calciferous and siliceous slurry into the open which gradually hardened into rock.
