Lenti and the Hetés
The Hetés landscape, also known as an ethnographic entity, borders Slovenia. Its largest settlement is Lenti.
Thermal waters discovered during drilling for oil in the outskirts of Lenti are utilised in the spa built at the site. The Tenke Hill (332 metres) to the south of the town is the highest point in the area.
The Hetés extends to the southwest of the Göcsej and the River Kerka and a part spreads into Slovenia. It is thought that the name has some connection with the Hungarian word for the number seven (hét). According to this perception originally seven villages would have belonged to this entity the names of which all ended in '-háza' ('home of'). Hetés is a flat land with many floodplains; it has extensive areas of marsh and swampy terrain. Following the draining of the marshlands in the 19th century agriculture became more widespread; this was relatively late compared to other areas in Hungary.
