Letenye
Since 1923, Letenye has served as an important public road border crossing into Croatia. Today it is one of the most significant southwestern gateways.
A 1341 charter mentions the settlement as Letyne, but by 1347 it is already recorded as Letenye. Its name is of Slavic origin; the Serbian-Croatian and the Slovenian languages have the word 'leto' (' summer') from which the name is thought to originate.
It was granted market town status at the end of the 15th century. During the Turkish occupation it suffered much since the Turkish troops raided the area several times. It had also lost it market town status by the end of the 17th century, while in the beginning of the 18th century the plague decimated the population. It was not until the 1930's that recovery began and since then development has been generally smooth. Having regained its market town status, it served as a district seat from 1871 until 1971. In 1989 it was granted city status.
How to get there:
By public transport, local Volán buses serve Letenye from Nagykanizsa and Zalaegerszeg. By car, take the M7 motorway (E71).
