Marcali and Nagyberek
This landscape includes a stronghold of folk art, Buzsák, famous for its
embroidery. In several settlements, furnished so-called regional houses
(tájház), or museum houses preserve the peasant architecture of times past.
The origins of Nagyberek ('Great Grove') can be explained by the fact that today's Lake Balaton once inundated the sandy lowlands - including a considerable section of Marcali ridge which is covered not by sand but by loess. The fish ponds of the Boronka Stream Valley also provide an excellent habitat for several bird species. Towards the south, the Boronka Landscape Protection Area is dedicated to protecting waterfowl and otters. Finally, Dániel Berzsenyi's former mansion in Nikla, turned into a memorial museum, now has a reputation as a 'place of pilgrimage' for adepts of literature.
