Nagyborzsony
The look of the town is reminiscent of a mining town as indeed the settlement was prior to 1526. Nagybörzöny assumed its modern name in 1908. It is equally suitable as the destination or the starting point for a hike in the area.
At one time there was mining for precious metals on the edge of the settlement, the traces of which are still visible at Nagyirtás-puszta, Bánya-puszta, and alongside the Kovács and Kuruc Streams. (The term Puszta is used for the area of dead settlements here.)
In the 15th century King Zsigmond settled skillful German masters into Nagybörzsöny who brought to the surface not only gold but also copper, sulphur and iron. The settlers named the town Deutschpilsen. The ore mines became depleted in the 18th century.
How to get there:
By railways, take the train to Szob. By car, go to Szob, then turn right onto the road along the Ipoly Valley to Parassapuszta and turn right again towards Nagybörzsöny between Ipolytölgyes and Vámosmikola.
