Nagykoru

This village has become famous for its cherries. The country's largest cherry orchard and only collection of cherry varieties is found here. Also, thanks to the proximity of the River Tisza the village, which has a ferry towards Fegyvernek, is a rural tourist resort.

The settlement was established in the early 14th century. The regulation of the river executed in 1856 changed the village's topographic situation as the Tisza's sinuosities were cut short and the lowlands protected by embankments.

In the late 19th century landowner György Petrovay naturalised the Germersdorfer cherry variety for which the village has been famous ever since. The country's only collection of cherry trees can be seen here numbering a little short of hundred varieties.

Nowadays the Nagykörű cherry is a protected brand name. During the spring visitors are taken around the blossoming cherry orchards in a horsedrawn carriage. The traditional series of events of the cherry festival are held for a month starting in mid July.

The River Tisza has always played a significant role in village life. Today rural tourism is becoming ever more popular, particularly as the largest sand beach of the Central Tisza stretch is here. The riverside and the floodplains belongs to the Central Tisza Landscape Protection Area. At Nagykörű regular handcraft and folk dance camps take place and the settlement is an International Tisza Tour stage.

How to get there:
A bicycle route leads here along the Tisza Embankment. From the Szolnok terminal local Volán bus lines serve the settlement. By car, take Route 4 to Szolnok and continue to the northeast; after city limits turn right onto the side road and continue to Nagykörű passing by Csataszög. Alternatively (especially if approaching from Debrecen) turn northwest at Fegyvernek and take the ferry across the River Tisza.
