Nagylak
Next to the town there is an international road border crossing with Romania.
Today known as a border settlement with Romania, the first written mention dates from 1313. Following the Mongol invasion some 60 villages and 14 'puszta' belonged to the Nagylak estate in the 15th century and Nagylak itself boasted town rights. Later, as the settlement's significance and the Hungarian population dwindled, Serbian settlers arrived who then moved on. Romanians settled here after 1750 and Slovakians moved here in 1903.
Since the Trianon Peace Treaty the historic town of Nagylak has been on the Romanian side of the border; its Romanian spelling is Nadlac. The part of Nagylak which remained on Hungarian territory developed from a colony established in 1904 by Nagylak Hemp Spinnery Plc., a hemp and flax processing plant.
How to get there:
By car, the settlement can be reached on Route 5 to Szeged, then on Route 43 through Makó to the Hungarian-Romanian border. It is on the Újszeged-Mezőhegyes-Kétegyháza-Békéscsaba railway line.
