Necropolis (okereszteny sirkamrak), Pecs
Online szállásfoglalás
An early Christian cemetery from the 4th-5th century stretches under St Stephen's Square. Listed amongst the World Heritage Site, certain sections of the site are now open to the public.
Research and excavations so far have discovered various tombs and more than a hundred graves grouped around a sepulchral chapel which has three aspes (Cella Trichora), another chapel with seven aspes (Cella Septichora), and a mausoleum.
The largest and most important ancient cemetery structure in Hungary is the Early Christian Mausoleum. Created by Italian itinerant painters the paintings found in the mausoleum are a collection of symbols of the early Christian faith.
Amongst the excavated burial chambers open to the public, the most well known is the Peter-Paul Chapel. It is ornamented with biblical scenes, images of the apostles Peter and Paul, and plant and animal motifs. The other well-known tomb is the 'Korsós' Chamber, named after the pitcher painted on a niche in the north wall.
The 'Trichora' sepulchral chapel was found in 1922 at the northeast
corner of the Episcopal Palace. Its painted walls stand 1.3 metres tall.
Part
of the 'Septichora' chapel lies under the parish building and part is under
Káptalan Street. These were excavated in 1938 and subsequently reburied. In the
1960's local historian Antal Fetter of Pécs made little bricks and tiles
out of clay by hand and built the models of the two sepulchral chapels. The
models are on display in the exhibition of the Archaeological Museum.
