Network of Parks in Miskolctapolca
In its territory are several centuries-old dendrological (hardwood) rarities, both exotics and domestic species. The park has a rowing lake and is a popular place for walks and a bit of peace and quiet.
The most gorgeous feature is the rowing lake and its shores which, laid out with ancient lawns, preserve their original vegetation. Built on a former swampy spring area, the lake has preserved a couple of clumps of its original alder wood on its small island and along the shore. The introduced mosquito eradicating toothed carp and other toothed carp still inhabit the lake today.
A little way from the formally landscaped park are some attractive large bald cypresses. Thanks to a special root that can allow or exclude oxygen (pneumatophores) they can survive when completely covered by water.
In the valley of the Hejő Stream, which used to be surrounded by wonderful alders in a swampy spring area, monks established a landscaped forest park as early as the Árpád Age (their monastery is currently being excavated). Tapolca, with the soothing peace of its valleys and for its micro-climate, was famous for its bathing culture even before the Turkish era. The network of parks in its current sense has been owned by the town since 1937. It is a protected asset of local importance.
The parks can be visited at any time.
