Opusztaszer Memorial Park of National History (Nemzeti Torteneti Emlekpark)
Tradition has it that the settling chiefs of Hungary stopped here and divided settling areas among themselves; in other words, the first Magyar 'diet' was held here. The memorial park was founded in honour of this.
A cluster of structures housing archaeological, historical, cultural history, fine arts, natural science and ethnographic collections and exhibits were established. Complemented by entertaining and educational events, an interesting experience is safeguarded here.
Permanent exhibitions are: Árpád Feszty: The arrival of the Magyars, 1896 Millennium Promenade, The Szer Monastery and its period, Garden of Ruins, Open-air Ethnography Museum, Man and the forest, and World House of Hungarians.
When a memorial was erected here in honour of Chieftain Árpád on the occasion of the Millennium in 1896 (the 1000th anniversary of the Magyars settling in Hungary) the area had already assumed symbolic significance. During excavations that began during the 1970's, archaeological finds included the ruins of a church and monastery and then remains of the town of Szer. The idea of a Memorial Park of National History was formed around that time and a committee was charged with realisation. The decision was made to establish an open-air ethnographic museum extenting to finds from all over the county, and later the restoration of the cyclorama painting by Feszty was also resolved. All these projects were finally achieved in the last decade of the 20th century.
