Pilismarot
The local free beach is one of the best; back in the 1930's it was already referred to as the silver coast or the lido of the Danube and a resort sprung up there.
The story of the settlement stretches back to ancient times. Valuable archaeological finds, the most significant being those from Roman times, have been excavated from around 40 sites along the border of the settlement.
The Romans called the settlement Ad Herculem. Considered a large colony, it had impressive ramparts and guard towers. The remains of the 2nd-3rd-century foundations of the military camp's wall are still visible on the Small Hill (Kis-hegy) that rises above Rákóczi Street.
Its subsequent history intertwines in several places with the various religious orders. Bela IV gave it to the Benedictine Order, later on King Zsigmond granted it to the prepost of Esztergom and then from 1493 until the dissolution of the order it was the property of the Pauline Order. In the Romantic-style Heckenast mansion Ferenc Deák penned the 1860 draft of the Compromise with the Austrian ruling house, legitimized in 1867.
How to get there from Budapest:
By public transport, take the local bus line to Esztergom. By car take Route 11. From the other bank take the nearby Szob ferry to cross the river.
