Polgar

The thermal waters of Polgár provide the main attraction for tourists. The settlement prides a superb example of late Classical architecture, its notably generous and majestic church.

Significant archaeological finds have been unearthed on the outskirts of the settlement; these items date from the early Copper Age of the Great Plain (Nagyalföld) known as Tisza Culture (Tiszapolgári kultúra). The first written documentation of the village is from 1229.

Once a chapter estate, a row of homesteads and estates developed in the expanding territory of the 18th century settlement several of which were to become independent communities during the 20th century.

Until 1950 Polgár belonged to Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County but was then given to Hajdú-Bihar County. A former market town it officially received city status in 1993.

Tourism in the city is based on the 72-degree Centigrade thermal waters that were discovered in the 1970's. On the north side of the city two thermal pools and children's pools were established along with a swimming pool. The waters of the pools have been shown to strengthen the human body and immune system, increasing its resistance to infection.

The campsite next to the baths is surrounded by a 7-hectare strip of wooded parkland which provides the quiet needed for true rest and relaxation.

How to get there:
Volán buses frequently serve Polgár from the Debrecen and Miskolc coach terminals; there are also trains and bus connections from Nyíregyháza. By car take the M3 motorway or Route 35 from Debrecen.
