Poroszlo

The town, known as the gateway to Lake Tisza, is a popular destination for ecotourists. Its public beach is a place to relax while the landing stage for boats serves canoe tours. The bird reservation in Tiszavalk Bay (Tiszavalki-öböl) is a strictly protected nature reserve.

Poroszló is an ancient town on the right bank of the Tisza. The 12th or 13th century Hungarian historian known as Anonymus mentioned that the settling Hungarians made an encampment under the earthen redoubts of the village. At one time a royal salt depository was here.

From 1869 to 1944, the main landholders of Poroszló were the Graefl family, invited into Hungary from Germany by Count István Széchenyi at the time of the building of the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) in Budapest. Their turreted mansion remains one of the most beautiful buildings in Poroszló today. The town has several heritage folk dwellings. One of these operates as a regional peasant house museum that houses an exhibition about the history of the town.

The public beach at Poroszló provides leisure and entertainment opportunities for almost 1500 people. Its boat landing stage has room for 400 canoes and boats.

The most exciting feature of the town, the bird reservation in Tiszavalk Bay (Tiszavalki-öböl), may only be viewed with a guide. The 2500-hectare nature reserve, part of the Hortobágyi National Park, is an internationally recognised reserve for waterfowl.

How to get there:
By public transport, Poroszló is served by railway from Füzesabony; or take a local Volán bus from Füzesabony. By car take the M3 motorway and at Füzesabony turn onto Route 33 via Poroszló.
