Puspokladany
The natural centre of the region, the town developed at the meeting point of three landscapes: Hortobágy, Greater Cumania and Nagysárrét. Its medicinal baths and the beautiful surrounding countryside are the main tourist attractions here.
The town rose to importance in the 19th century. With a railway junction it developed into a transit station for eastbound commercial traffic from Vienna and Budapest. The national railway line divides here towards Debrecen-Satu Mare/Szatmárnémeti and Oradea/Nagyvárad-Cluj Napoca/Kolozsvár.
Archaeological finds prove that the settlement has been inhabited for a long time, but the earliest written record is from 1351 as 'Ladány'. In 1423, the delegate of the Eger Chapter recorded a stone church dedicated to the Virgin Mary with a wooden tower in the village.
Perhaps the main tourist attraction in Püspökladány is the thermal baths open all year round. Its curative waters match those of Hajdúszoboszló. The town has plenty to offer to anglers and hunters, as well as to the adepts of horse riding or horse and cart.
Among the noteworthy natural assets is the arboretum on Wolf Island (Farkas-sziget) established in 1924 primarily to study the afforestation of alkaline soils.
Püspökladány was granted city status in 1986. It hosts two regular events: in May the Children's Folk Music and Folk Dance Festival of the Sárrétmente Region (Sárrétmenti Gyermek Népzenei és Néptáncfesztivál), and the Entrepreneurial Weeks in Sárrétmente (Sárrétmenti Vállalkozói Hetek) in November.
How to get there:
By railway from Budapest, there are 1 to 3 connection an hour departing from both the Keleti and the Nyugati Stations, about half of them serving Püspökladány directly, the other half necessitating a change at Szolnok. From Debrecen 1 to 3 trains an hour and 7 Volán coaches a day serve the city without a change. From Berettyóújfalu there are 15 trains a day, 3 of them directly from the city of Oradea/Nagyvárad. The first towns on the loop line towards the south are Füzsegyarmat and Szeghalom with 9 connections a day. By car take route 4 and look for the town between Karcag and Hajdúszoboszló, two neighbouring cities on the Budapest-Debrecen railway line.
