Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Szent Kereszt), Tata
The late Rococo-style church with its twin towers was built according to designs of Franz Anton Pilgram and Jakab Fellner from 1751 to 1787. The sacristy's opulent Rococo furnishings were moved here from the Majk Camaldolese hermitage.
Both the external and the internal ornamentation of the single-aisle church are dominated by festoons of leaves. Narrower than the main nave, the pillared sanctuary with the main altar houses the carved corpus from Calvary, the work of Antal Schweiger. Other valuable items include the marble choir rail, the richly carved pulpit and the painting of the parting of the Apostles Peter and Paul by Hubert Mauer. The confessionals and benches are also in the late Rococo, so-called Copf style.
The crypt of the church is the final resting place of Archbishop Ambrus Károly, Count Francis Esterházy and the architect Jakab Fellner.
Can be visited upon prior arrangement.
