Roman Catholic church (Szent Anna katolikus templom), Kapuvar
Defining the town centre, this church was built in Classical style at the beginning of the 19th century and later refurbished in an eclectic style. The angels painted onto the ceiling are dressed in traditional costumes of Kapuvár.
Semi-columns articulate the facade above the main entrance. Facing south, a steeple covered by a cupola rises from the main facade with its pronounced central projection. A Viennese master painted the high altarpiece representing the patron saint, St Anne, accompanied by Mary and Joachim. The communion table in front was created in a Sopron workshop in the late 19th century. The fresco on the sanctuary wall depicts King St Stephen I dedicating his crown to Our Lady of Hungary. Other frescos of the church were painted by József Samodai in the late 1950's. Amongst these, particularly noteworthy is the ceiling above the organ loft where the angelic host is dressed in traditional Kapuvár costumes.
Although a chapel already stood in the local castle protected by a rampart and a moat, another wooden church was erected opposite the castle in the second half of the 17th century. The unprotected wooden edifice perished and St Anne's was erected in its place. The church gained its current shape in the 1884 refurbishment.
