Ruins of Benedictine monastery (Bences apatsag romjai), Kaposvar
Online szállásfoglalás
The Romanesque-style fragments of the Benedictine monastery founded in 1061 are the oldest protected heritage of Kaposvár.
Founded in 1061, the monastery became the property of the Dersffy family following a struggle between medieval estates for ownership rights.
The monastery had been already abandoned in the 1550's and during the later battles against the Turkish it took on a secular role. After that the building started to fall into disrepair.
Local council of Kaposvár had the remains of this Benedictine monastery at Szentjakab preserved and partly reconstructed in 2001. This historical heritage of the town was transformed into a cultural centre. Outdoor music and theatre nights are staged here, along with workshops and exhibitions. The footpaths, the cloisters with their painted wooden structure and the ancient walls provide a very special atmosphere.
