Sarospatak and the Bodrogkoz
The Bodrogköz lies to the east of Tokaj-Hegyalja and is defined by the rivers Bodrog and Tisza. The most important settlement in the region is Sárospatak.
The castle at Sárospatak was once the centre of the region and subsequently the Reformed grammar school and college conferred upon the town its role as a cultural centre.
The lower-lying areas of Bodrogzug and the Bodrogköz near Tokaj are flooded every spring and the land turns into a sea. The landscape is dominated by the oxbow lakes, gallery forests and floodplain willow groves along the rivers.
Along with rich finds, the graves of the warrior chieftains who supported Chieftain Árpád were discovered in the outskirts of Karos. The majority of the settlements in the area are of medieval origin. The Karcsa Romanesque church is among the outstanding local heritage.
