Sopron and the Ferto region
Sopron, the largest settlement in the area, lies between the Sopron Hills alongside the Austrian-Hungarian border and Lake Fertő.
The most western steppe lake in Eurasia, the very alkaline and strictly protected nature reserve of Lake Fertő spreads over the Austrian-Hungarian border. It is listed among the World Heritage for the quality of both its habitats and its built environment. Of the 309 square kilometres of lake surface only 75 remained within the borders of Hungary post World War I.
Alongside Sopron which has an abundance of heritage buildings and museums the other settlements in the region also have plenty to offer. Special attractions include the quarry now used for concerts in Fertőrákos, the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, and the Széchenyi Palace in Nagycenk.
