Frigyes Schulek, who also designed the Fishermen's Bastion, was the
architect of the nearly 5.5 metre tall pedestal. The pedestal is surrounded by
oval-shaped fretwork balustrade ornamented with the Lamb of God and reliefs of
the four evangelists.
The reliefs on the four sides of its base highlight
the outstanding attributes of St Stephen's reign: the coronation, lawmaking,
a church building, homage of Vienna to the King.
Alajos Stróbl immortalised
Frigyes Schulek on the relief depicting church building; Schulek is the second
figure from the right, behind the friar with the spade. Other recognisable
figures are the famous novelist Mór Jókai, the painter Gyula Benczúr, and Alajos
Stróbl's mother. On the relief depicting the homage of Vienna the figure bowing
to the ground in front of St Stephen is Dr. Karl Lueger (1870-1950), mayor of
Vienna at the time the statue was unveiled.
