Szemlohegy Cave (Szemlohegyi-barlang)
The Szemlohegy Cave, used as a medicinal cave, is strictly protected. Its special treasure is the peastone formations that glitter like jewels. A 300-metre section of the 2-kilometre long cave-passage is open to the public.
This cave, with its spectacular array of formations and its spacious passages, is under the Buda Hills. Its special formations, rare in Europe, are the so-called 'peastones' which are formed in locations where hot springs run through limestone rock.
The humid air of the cave is a permanent 12
degrees Centigrade and has beneficial healing effects on the respiratory
organs.
The reception building hosts an exhibition on the most
significant caves in the Buda Hills.
The cave can be visited only with a
tour-guide and hourly
tours start on
the hour. Foreign language tours are available upon prior
booking.
