Sziget Festival, Budapest
The Sziget Festival is one of the
biggest cultural and music festivals in Europe. The festival is held annually in August in Budapest, Hungary and takes place on Óbudai-sziget ("Old-Buda Island"), a leafy island of 108 hectares on the Danube, thus Sziget stands for Island.
The week-long party, concert-, and
fun-packed that is the Sziget Festival has taken place on the Óbudai Island, one
of the islands of the Danube, every year since 1992. A Post Office, bank, pubs,
restaurants, and shops all serve the campers of this temporary festival
city.
There are several `thematic' stages
alongside the most fashionable pop music; hard rock, world music, electric dance
music, alternative style, blues, and jazz sounding out 24 hours a day. Alongside
the musical programmes, visitors can choose from theatre and contemporary dance
performances, exhibitions, literary evenings, classical music concerts, opera,
cabarets, and circus and puppet theatre performances. Sports events are also on
offer, while non-governmental organisations help the youth in matters they may
meet in different stages of their life.
