Szigetbecse
The surrounding forests and reed beds and the colony of summerhouses lining the shore of the Danube at Ráckeve make Szigetbecse a remarkably peaceful recreational destination. A memorial house dedicated to world famous photographer André Kertész is found here.
The first record of Becse (short form of Szigetbecse) dates back to the 12th century, as belonging to the Becse-Gergely clan. In 1497 it is listed as part of the lands owned by Queen Beatrix. The town was first populated by Magyars who later moved to Makád, then by Serbs who moved to Lórév. They were followed by German-speaking Austrians from Styria who have preserved their cultural traditions to this day. These inhabitants call the village 'Wetsch'.
How to get there:
By public transport, your best bet is to take the suburban railway (HÉV) to Ráckeve. By car, Szigetbecse can be accessed from Ráckeve on Route 51 from Csepel, and from Route 6 crossing the river by ferry at Lórév.
