Szigetvar and its surroundings
The most important town of this region is Szigetvár, rich in historical heritage.
In the mid 16th century Szigetvár was an important link in the chain of Hungarian border castles and several sieges carried out by Turkish forces were unsuccessful. It is no accident that it was here that the Croatian palatine Nicolaus Zrínyi attempted to halt the advancing troops led personally by Sultan Suleiman in 1566. Although the majority of the area's villages were destroyed over the decades of advancing troops resettlement was successful over the following centuries.
The cherished natural asset of the area is its thermal water. At the Castle Garden (Várkert) Thermal Baths in Szigetvár the 62 degree Celsius water with sodium chloride and hydrogen carbonate also has a significant fluoride content and rises at 3000 litres/min.
