Szilvasvarad

Well known for its natural treasures this settlement is particularly popular for excursions. Szilvásvárad's horse breeding traditions have made the settlement world famous and an international centre of equestrian sports.

The settlement located in the Bükk Hills was already populated at the time of prehistoric man. The richest archaeological discoveries of the region were found near to the settlement in the Istállóskő Cave.

In the 14th century the area belonged to Éleskő Castle, one of the very few stone castles built before the Mongol invasion. Today only wall fragments bear witness to the former castle.

Founded in the 1950's, the Lippizan stud developed into a centre for equestrian sports which has retained its popularity to this day. Its past is displayed at the 'Lippizan Horse Breeding History Exhibition' (Lipicai Lótenyésztés Történeti Kiállítás).

Alongside the architectural sights, the Open-air Forestry Museum (Szabadtéri Erdészeti Múzeum) and the exhibition of the Medieval Jail Museum (Középkori Börtönmúzeum) are also worth visiting.

Several signed footpaths start from Szilvásvárad leading to the surrounding natural sights, such as the Veil Waterfall (Fátyol-vízesés) and into the . A study trail introduces the living natural world around here. The local tourist railway (kisvasút) also takes visitors into the valley.

How to get there:
By public transport, take a train from Eger; local Volán buses also run to Szilvásvárad. By car, take Route 25 and after Szarvaskő turn towards Bélapátfalva.
